The Task
On 4 November 2024, Springer Nature and Spektrum der Wissenschaft invited guests to Science on the Spree in Berlin. As part of Berlin Science Week, experts from science and politics discussed drug policy and the rising number of drug-related deaths under the title “Wie stoppen wir den tödlichen Rausch?” (How do we stop the deadly high?). The panel brought together guests from Germany and Canada. 80 people followed the debate on site, around 300 more via livestream. So that everyone could follow in real time, the discussion was to be interpreted simultaneously between German and English.
Our solution
Our team of two simultaneous interpreters prepared thoroughly in advance, covering everything from addiction medicine and pharmacology to the current drug policy debate. Terminology, names and the running order were agreed with the organiser beforehand. On site, they interpreted the panel discussion and the audience questions live in both language directions. The interpreting equipment was provided by the organiser. We coordinated closely with the technical and streaming team so that the booth sound, the room audio and the livestream worked together smoothly. That way the online audience could hear the interpreted version without interruption too.
