The Task
Rijk Zwaan celebrated its 100th anniversary. The Dutch family business has been breeding vegetable seeds since 1924 and is now one of the four largest suppliers worldwide. Its German subsidiary, Rijk Zwaan Welver GmbH, was the group's first foreign branch when it opened in 1964 and has been based in Welver in Westphalia since 1973. The celebration took place in Werl with around 200 guests. A marquee was set up specially for the occasion. The programme included a panel discussion that needed to be interpreted simultaneously for the international guests. A marquee brings none of the conditions required for that. There is no permanent technology, no designated space for an interpreting booth and no predictable acoustics.
Our Solution
We were involved early on and worked with Rijk Zwaan to establish how simultaneous interpreting could best be delivered in the marquee. This covered the position of the interpreting booth, the connection to the stage and sound system and the distribution of receivers to the guests. All of the interpreting equipment came from our own stock. Our team set it up on site, tested it in advance and looked after it throughout the celebration. We interpreted the panel discussion and the questions from the audience live between German and English. That way every guest could follow the discussion, and the technology stayed in the background where it belongs.
